Performance at NET re:Routes
Safos Dance Theatre is proud to announce that we will be performing Yvonne Montoya’s piece “Braceros” at the Network of Ensemble Theatre’s 2018 NET National Gathering and Symposium in Tempe, AZ. “Braceros” is was created in loving memory of the choreographer's father Juan "Johnny" Montoya Sena. The dance reflects the time he worked as a Bracero, a migrant farm worker, picking watermelon and cantaloupe in the fields of Southern Arizona and Southern California in the early 1960s. “Braceros” is an excerpt of the larger work “Stories from Home” which is based on oral histories collected from the choreographer’s family members and touches upon intersections of identities, languages, and cultures in the U.S. Southwest. “Braceros” was created with support from SPACE on Ryder Farm
Also, Safos director Yvonne Montoya will also be a panelist for NET’s morning plenary “From DIY to DIT: Building Community, Weaving Networks & Sharing Resources Part 1 Dance in the Desert: Latinx Artists Co-Creating Community Across Distance.” The plenary will discuss Dance in the Desert 2018, a project of which Safos was a partner organization.
